About LAX Airport

LAXLos Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the largest airport serving the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the sixth-busiest airport in the United States. Many direct flights depart from LAX daily, including flights to Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and the Middle East. Both United and Alaska Airlines use LAX as a major hub, and American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air, Air New Zealand and Virgin America all have major operations at the airport.

Nine terminals serve LAX; there are eight terminals used primarily for domestic flights, and the Tom Bradley International terminal, which serves most of the international flights and airlines. The international terminal was opened in 1984 for the Summer Olympic Games.

LAX is located in Westchester, which is approximately 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The airport was built in 1930, when it was known as Mines Field. In 1941, the name was changed to Los Angeles Airport, and in 1945 the airport was renamed Los Angeles International Airport.
